First aid at a road crash

Secure the scene first, call for help, then give first aid — and what you must never do.

Order of actions

  1. Secure the scene — hazard lights, warning markers, prevent a second crash.
  2. Call 115 and the police; give the location, number of casualties and their condition.
  3. Check consciousness and breathing.
  4. Stop bleeding with direct pressure using gauze or clean cloth.
  5. Keep the casualty warm and reassured until the ambulance arrives.

Never do this

  • Do not move anyone with a suspected spinal injury unless staying is more dangerous (fire).
  • Do not remove a helmet unless it is blocking breathing.
  • Do not give food or drink.
  • Do not pull out an embedded object — it can cause massive bleeding.

A driver involved in a crash has a duty to stop, preserve the scene, help the injured and report it. Fleeing is an aggravating circumstance.
